State of the Heart

What if following Jesus asked far more of us than simply avoiding the wrong actions? In this deep dive into Matthew 5:21-48, we explore one of the most challenging stretches of the Sermon on the Mount, where Jesus systematically takes the familiar commands of the Old Testament law and drives them straight to the heart. Anger, lust, divorce, oath-taking, retaliation, and love of enemies -- Jesus addresses all of it, and in every case he pushes past the behavior and into the interior life. We are confronted with a stunning reality: the standard Jesus sets is not just difficult, it is impossible. We cannot stop every angry thought, we cannot purify every impulse, we cannot love every enemy perfectly. And yet that impossibility is precisely the point. When we arrive at the end of this passage and hear the words 'be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect,' we are meant to feel the weight of our own limitation. That weight is not meant to crush us -- it is meant to drive us toward the only one who can actually make us righteous. The law reveals the problem. Jesus is the answer.
