Salt and Light
What does it actually mean to follow Jesus in our everyday lives? This message digs into one of the most powerful and personal declarations Jesus ever made to his followers in the Sermon on the Mount, found in Matthew 5:13-16, where he looks at ordinary people and says something extraordinary: you are the salt of the earth, and you are the light of the world. Not you should be, not one day you might be, but you are. We explore what salt meant in the ancient world, how it was so valuable that it was used as currency and gave us words like salary, and how it preserved life by stopping decay. The spiritual parallel is stunning. We carry that same capacity. We are valuable to God, and we have the ability to stop the spiritual and moral decay around us simply by being who Christ has called us to be. But there is a warning woven into the metaphor. Impure salt loses its saltiness when the impurities take over and the real salt washes away. The same is true for us. The areas of our lives where we drift from kingdom living quietly dilute our effectiveness. This is not a message of condemnation but of honest self-awareness and renewed identity. We are called to embrace who we already are in Christ, lean into that truth, and let it shape how we show up in the world.
