Different Priorities
What does it actually mean to treasure something? In Matthew 6:19-24, we are challenged to look honestly at what we are holding onto and why. Jesus draws a sharp line between earthly treasures, which are temporary and vulnerable to decay, theft, and loss, and heavenly treasures, which are eternal and dependable. The message is not that wealth or saving or owning things is wrong. It is that when those things move from our hands into our hearts, we have crossed into dangerous territory. The question we are invited to sit with is not how much we have, but what we treasure. Where we place our treasure is where our heart ends up, and that is true whether we have very little or a great deal. This is a message for anyone with a heart, and that means all of us.
