Jesus Gives Freedom & The Holy Spirit
What does it truly mean to be a disciple of Jesus in our modern world? Being a disciple isn't about earning righteousness through religious activities or following rules—it's about walking in intimate relationship with the Holy Spirit. Paul's urgent letter to the Galatians reveals a timeless tension we still face today: the choice between living by the flesh or living by the Spirit. Our freedom in Christ isn't a license for self-indulgence, but rather a 'base of operations' for love to flourish. Like the acacia tree in the Israeli desert that develops deep roots to tap into hidden water sources, we too must develop spiritual practices that connect us to the life-giving presence of God. The fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control—isn't produced through striving or checking off spiritual boxes. Instead, these qualities emerge naturally when we 'keep in step' with the Spirit.
